"[Persistence through gratitude:-] Pain is inevitable, but suffering is optional. [This is sometimes stated as the choice between one or two painful ‘arrows’ - the first ‘arrow’ is unavoidable, inevitable pain but the second ‘arrow’ is avoidable, optional suffering. Often the suffering comes from naturally wanting the pain to be less which comes from comparing the pain with something better - namely no pain. It is possible however to reduce the suffering by comparing the pain with something even more painful and therefore naturally feeling some relief and gratitude that the pain is not worse - it is less than it could be!]"
