  Quotations - General
[Quote No.57104] Need Area: Body > General
"[The mystery of death: One way to think about it and come to terms with it, without spirituality, is, although the process of dying may be painful] ...being dead is, on a naturalistic [personal, subjective, rational] view, identical to being unborn [or in dreamless sleep], nothing about death itself makes it good or evil [to the dead individual]. It is only what it removes from us that makes it so. If it removes intolerable and interminable pain, it is good [or at least not all bad]; if it removes opportunities, hopes, connections with the beloved, it is bad. Some argue that one's own death is never bad, because in death one cannot be aware of what is lost. It is the prospect of loss [of the individual's own life, while living, which is against our evolutionarily - advantageous 'survival instinct'] which is the evil, not the fact of it; so once again death is a problem for the living. It is an avoidable problem, therefore, for one can ignore it [- not focus on it but distract from thoughts about it]. In the same way, one can avoid fear of dying by accepting and then ignoring its inevitability, so avoiding the coward's fate of dying in imagination a thousand times over. [Of course after death, those that remain will have to come to terms with the loss of that individual, which is often difficult. One way to tackle that challenge is to be grateful that things are not worse. For example, being grateful for the time had with them rather than wanting more.]" - A. C. Grayling
(1949 - ), Anthony Clifford Grayling, British philosopher. Quoted in his book, ‘The Meaning of Things - Applying Philosophy to Life’.

"[The mystery of death:] The cradle rocks above an abyss, and common sense tells us that our existence is but a brief crack of light between two eternities of darkness [mystery]. Although the two are identical twins, man, as a rule, views the prenatal abyss with more calm than the one he is heading for (at some forty-five hundred heartbeats an hour)." - Vladimir Nabokov
Quote from his work, ‘Speak, Memory: A Memoir’, (1951).

[Quote No.57291] Need Area: Body > General
"[The mystery of death:]

A Time for Everything

There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens:

a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,
a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,
a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,
a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,
a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to keep and a time to throw away,
a time to tear and a time to mend,
a time to be silent and a time to speak,
a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace.

"[The mystery of death:] Death is but a word to us. One's own experience alone can teach us the real meaning of the word. The sight of the dying does little. What one sees of them is merely what precedes death: dull unconsciousness is all we see. Whether this be so, - how and when the spirit wakes to life again, - this is what all wish to know, and what never can be known until it is experienced." - Wilhelm von Humboldt

"[The mystery of death:] Annihilation has no terrors for me, because I have already tried it before I was born - a hundred million years - and I have suffered more in an hour, in this life, than I remember to have suffered in the whole hundred million years put together. There was a peace, a serenity, an absence of all sense of responsibility, an absence of worry, an absence of care, grief, perplexity; and the presence of a deep content and unbroken satisfaction in that hundred million years of holiday which I look back upon with a tender longing and with a grateful desire to resume, when the opportunity comes." - Mark Twain

"[The mystery of death:] Perhaps passing through the gates of death is like passing quietly through the gate in a pasture fence. On the other side, you keep walking, without the need to look back. No shock, no drama, just the lifting of a plank or two in a simple wooden gate in a clearing. Neither pain, nor floods of light, nor great voices, but just the silent crossing of a meadow." - Mark Helprin
