"The one thing you can't take away from me is the way I choose to respond to what you do to me. The last of one's freedoms is to choose one's attitude in any given circumstance. [Quote No.33760] Need Area: Fun > Gratitude
"Michael is the kind of guy you love to hate. He is always in a good mood and always has something positive to say. When someone would ask him how he was doing, he would reply, 'If I were any better, I would be twins!' He was a natural motivator. If an employee was having a bad day, Michael was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation. Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up to Michael and asked him, 'I don't get it! You can't be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?' Michael replied, 'Each morning I wake up and say to myself, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or ... you can choose to be in a bad mood. I choose to be in a good mood. Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or...I can choose to learn from it. I choose to learn from it. Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or... I can point out the positive side of life. I choose the positive side of life.' 'Yeah, right, it's not that easy,' I protested. 'Yes, it is,' Michael said. 'Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice. You choose how you react to situations. You choose how people affect your mood. You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood. The bottom line: It's your choice how you live your life. [It's your choice whether you choose to be grateful that things aren't worse or you choose to be bitter because things aren't better!]" - Anon

[Quote No.35937] Need Area: Fun > Gratitude
"Throughout history, religion and philosophy has found that developing the feelings of gratitude can help people feel more serene and happy. Psychology also has some interesting and useful things to say, in particular from the study of cognitive biases. These are instances of evolved mental behaviour. Some are presumably adaptive, for example, because they lead to more effective actions in given contexts or enable faster decisions when faster decisions are of greater value. Others presumably result from a lack of appropriate mental mechanisms, or from the misapplication of a mechanism that is adaptive under different circumstances but may not be helpful in that situation. Two cognitive biases that psychology has studied that any person can easily use to improve their sense of gratitude and happiness IN ANY SITUATION AT ALL are [1] 'contrast effect' and [2] 'framing'. [1] A contrast effect is the enhancement or diminishment, relative to normal, of perception, cognition and related performance as a result of immediately previous or simultaneous exposure to a stimulus of lesser or greater value in the same dimension. (Here, normal perception or performance is that which would be obtained in the absence of the comparison stimulus—i.e., one based on all previous experience.) Contrast effects are ubiquitous throughout human and non-human animal perception, cognition, and resultant performance. A hefted weight is perceived as heavier than normal when 'contrasted' with a lighter weight. It is perceived as lighter than normal when contrasted with a heavier weight. An animal works harder than normal for a given amount of reward when that amount is contrasted with a lesser amount and works less energetically for that given amount when it is contrasted with a greater amount. A person appears more appealing than normal when contrasted with a person of less appeal and less appealing than normal when contrasted with one of greater appeal. This can be used to enhance perceived feelings of gratitude and happiness in any situation at all by taking whatever experience you are having, have had or about to have and contrast it in your imagination with something you consider worse in quality and/or quantity. Voila! You can't help but feel grateful and happy that things aren't that bad! ‘Things could be worse!’ Try it. It works. Evolution has mentally hardwired it into us for it to work. By the same token you can be guaranteed to feel dissatisfaction and unhappiness if you use this cognitive bias ‘contrast effect’ to compare your present situation, etc. with something that is better, rather than worse. In our consumer society, advertisers, politicians, etc. use this understanding of our psychology to sell us things by creating inspirational dissatisfaction. That is dissatisfaction with our present situation and the aspiration for the 'better' product or service. Understanding how this cognitive bias ‘contrast effect’ works puts the individual in charge of their own feelings so they can use it to be grateful for what they have while they strive for something better, by controlling what they compare their situation to depending on whether they want to feel gratitude and happiness or be motivated to strive for something at that time. [2] The other cognitive bias that any person can easily use to improve their sense of gratitude and happiness in any situation is 'framing'. In psychology, framing is influenced by the background of a context choice and/or the way in which a statement or question is worded. For example, when one seeks to explain an event, the understanding often depends on the frame referred to. A frame defines the packaging of an element of rhetoric in such a way as to encourage certain interpretations and to discourage others. In order to elicit gratitude and happiness, in ourselves or others, the way it would work would be to 'frame' the question or statement about the situation to focus on how lucky, good, etc., it was that it wasn't worse – combining framing with the contrast effect as described above. To elicit dissatisfaction and inspire ambition would be to then focus on how we or they would feel if and when it was better and to instil confidence in our own and/or the other the person's ability to eventually reach that goal and experience all those 'better' feelings. If we consider a glass of water then the old definition of the difference between an optimist and a pessimist is that an optimist sees the glass half full while the pessimist sees it half empty that would be an example of consciously using the 'frame' cognitive bias thinking to make you grateful and happy and the difference between having a glass of water or not having any when you are really thirsty would be an example of consciously using the 'contrast effect' cognitive bias thinking to make you grateful and happy." - Ben O'Grady
