"[Ethics and morality:] When we finally know we are dying, and all other sentient beings are dying with us, we start to have a burning, almost heartbreaking sense of the fragility and preciousness of each moment and each being, and from this can grow a deep, clear, limitless compassion for all beings." - Sogyal Rinpoche

"[Ethics and morality, reciprocity, empathy and the 'golden rule' of treating others as you and they would like to be treated:] A man's ethical behaviour should be based effectually on sympathy, education, and social ties and needs; no religious basis is necessary. Man would indeed be in a poor way if he had to be restrained by fear of punishment and hope of reward after death." - Albert Einstein

"[Be wary of politicians and governments that use a 'crisis' to justify even a supposedly temporary measure that infringes upon ethical and constitutional birth-rights:] The concept of military necessity is seductively broad, and has a dangerous plasticity. Because they invariably have the visage of overriding importance, there is always a temptation to invoke security 'necessities' to justify an encroachment upon civil liberties. For that reason, the military-security argument must be approached with a healthy scepticism." - Justice William J. Brennan

"[Morality, ethics, reciprocity and the 'Golden Rule' of treating others as you would like to be treated in the same situation:] Helping someone else is the best way to ensure your own survival. It takes you out of yourself. It helps you to rise above your fears. Now you're a rescuer, not a victim. And seeing how your leadership and skill buoy others up gives you more focus and energy to persevere. The cycle reinforces itself: You buoy them up, and their response buoys you up. Many people who survive alone report that they were doing it for someone else (a wife, boyfriend, mother, son) back home." - Laurence Gonzales

[Quote No.57499] Need Area: Friends > General
"[Politics and economic management:] Does the [US] stock market affect or predict the [US] election outcome? The old saying that 'people vote their pocketbooks' is more accurate than the average [US] political analyst thinks. While Wall Street typically worries about how politics might affect the market, perhaps [US] Presidential candidates should worry about how the [US] stock market might affect their political outcomes. Historically, the [US] market performance in the three months leading up to a [US] Presidential Election has displayed an uncanny ability to forecast who will win the White House... the incumbent party or the challenger. Since 1928, there have been 22 Presidential Elections. In 14 of them, the S&P 500 climbed during the three months preceding election day. The incumbent President or party won in 12 of those 14 instances. However, in 7 of the 8 elections where the S&P 500 fell over that three month period, the incumbent party lost. There are only three exceptions to this correlation: 1956, 1968, and 1980. Statistically, the market has an 86.4% success rate in forecasting the election! This relationship occurs because the stock market reflects the economic outlook in the weeks leading up to the election. A rising stock market indicates an improving economy, which means rising confidence and increases the chances of the incumbent party's re-election. Therefore, your time might be better spent from August through October watching the [US] stock market rather than the debates if you want to know who will be [US] President for the next four years." - James Stack

"Communism is like Prohibition, it's a good idea but it won't work [because it is at odds with our human nature for individual freedom and happiness, and it has therefore been subverted by many wherever it has been tried]." - Will Rogers
(1879 - 1935), American comedian. Prohibition in the United States was a nationwide constitutional ban on the sale, production, importation, and transportation of alcoholic beverages that remained in place from 1920 to 1933. It came into effect as the Eighteenth Amendment to the US Constitution.

[Quote No.57551] Need Area: Friends > General
"[While their is value in doubt and skepticism, it can be taken so far as to become unhelpful and maladaptive. For example, in general, for your happiness as well as others, give people the benefit of the doubt, as the law says, ‘innocent until proven guilty’. Be rationally optimistic and progressively more trusting with each person, until experience proves them untrustworthy:] To me it seems to be important to believe people to be good even if they tend to be bad, because your own joy and happiness in life is increased that way, and the pleasures of the belief outweigh the occasional disappointments. To be a cynic about people works just the other way around and makes you incapable of enjoying the good things." - Isaac Asimov
American author and professor of biochemistry at Boston University. Quoted in the book, ‘Isaac Asimov: It’s Been a Good Life’, published 2002 and edited by Janet Jeppson Asimov, p. 159.

"[Human rights:] No one has a right [by being born - a birth right/human right] to food, water, shelter, money, or love if he must obtain it at the [fraudulent or forced, involuntary] expense of the owner. Medical care is no more a right than these. Man rightfully obtains goods and services by producing them from nature or by voluntary exchange with others. Man may exchange goods, services, and emotional values, but he must [freely, voluntarily] trade to obtain them. Otherwise he is a thief acting against human existence." - Charles W. Johnson

"It is too true, however disgraceful it may be to human nature, that nations in general will make war whenever they have a prospect of getting any thing by it; nay, absolute monarch will often make war when their nations are to get nothing by it, but for purposes and objects merely personal, such as a thirst for military glory, revenge for personal affronts, ambition, or private compacts to aggrandize or support their particular families or partisans. These and a variety of other motives, which affect only the mind of the sovereign, often lead him to engage in wars not sanctioned by justice or the voice and interests of his people." - John Jay

"Government spending on business only aggravates the problem. Too many business have successfully lobbied for special favors and treatment by seeking mandates for their products, subsidies (in the form of cash payments from the government), and regulations and tariffs to keep more efficient competitors at bay. Crony capitalism is much easier than competing in an open market. "In a free [from fraud or force] society, you decide. In an authoritarian society, the government decides. Libertarians believe in a free [from fraud or force] society. Statists believe in a society heavily controlled by legislation, laws, regulations, judges, bureaucrats, ordinances, prisons, violence, force, aggression, coercion, badges, and guns." - Laurence M. Vance

"[The equal unalienable right to individual informed choice which means freedom from fraud and force:] The only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others. His own good, either physical or moral, is not sufficient warrant." - John Stuart Mill

"Socialism is the phantastic younger brother of despotism, which it wants to inherit. Socialism wants to have the fullness of state force which before only existed in despotism. ... However, it goes further than anything in the past because it aims at the formal destruction of the individual ... who ... can be used to improve communities by an expedient organ of government." - Friedrich Nietzsche
(1844-1900)

"[Politicians are not necessarily experts in anything as their party usually has many policy advisors and they also can rely on their staff of experienced, permanent public servants:] It's hard to imagine a job that requires less education than that of government minister. It's also hard to imagine a job where the occupant is less likely to seek help than that of government minister. " - John David Hill
