  Quotations - Children
[Quote No.35892] Need Area: Friends > Children
"Man is born an asocial and antisocial being. The newborn child is a savage. Egoism is his nature. Only the experience of life and the teachings of his parents, his brothers, sisters, playmates, and later of other people force him to acknowledge the advantages of social cooperation and accordingly to change his behavior. [Maturation is a process of growth from dependence to independence to interdependence.]" - Ludwig von Mises
[1881 – 1973], an Austrian-American economist, historian, philosopher, author, and classical liberal who had a significant influence on the modern free-market libertarian movement and the Austrian School of economics.

[Quote No.35929] Need Area: Friends > Children
"[Compulsory, institutionalised] Education rears disciples, imitators, and routinists, not pioneers of new ideas and creative geniuses [that lift the whole of society with their achievements]...The mark of the creative mind is that it defies a part of what it has learned or, at least, adds something new to it. [While a solid educational grounding in the basics is required, to bring out the full potential of any student they should be encouraged to follow their own interests, to be life-long self-educators - indefatigable autodidactics, and to freely experiment to gain and refine first hand experience into useful practical knowledge, insight and hopefully wisdom which they will share for the benefit of all.]" - Ludwig von Mises

"No one can look back on his schooldays and say with truth that they were altogether unhappy." - George Orwell
George Orwell [1903 – 1950], was the pen name of Eric Arthur Blair, who was an English author and journalist. [Quote No.36492] Need Area: Friends > Children
"A general State education is a mere contrivance for moulding people to be exactly like one another: and as the mould in which it casts them is that which pleases the predominant power in the government, whether this be a monarch, a priesthood, an aristocracy, or the majority of the existing generation, in proportion as it is efficient and successful, it establishes a despotism over the mind, leading by natural tendency to one over the body. [The current public education system is more focused on producing people with the attitudes, knowledge and skills to be good workers rather than people with all the life-skills to have a balanced, successful life. It is therefore the responsibility of parents, wise and caring teachers and the students themselves to learn the meta-lifeskills that transform knowledge, educational qualifications and work competency into wisdom, success and happiness.]" - John Stuart Mill
English social and economic philosopher.

[Quote No.37871] Need Area: Friends > Children
"Kids who count blessings multiply satisfaction: Jeffrey Froh, an assistant professor of psychology at Hofstra University, says that 'grateful kids are happier and more satisfied with their lives.' Thanking people is good manners, but it may also lead to better, healthier lives. 'We know that grateful kids are happier and more satisfied with their lives,' says Jeffrey Froh, an assistant professor of psychology at Hofstra University who focuses on the topic. 'They report better relationships with friends and family, higher GPAs, less materialism, less envy and less depression, along with a desire to connect to their community and to want to give back.' He adds that there's an even larger field of research on adults showing that being thankful has numerous psychological, social and even physical benefits such as lower blood pressure. One of Froh's studies found that early adolescents who simply 'counted their blessings' in a journal every day for two weeks were more appreciative than those who didn't, as well as more optimistic and more satisfied with their lives. In a forthcoming study, he and his co-authors also found that schoolchildren who were exposed to a specific 'gratitude curriculum' reported more appreciation and happiness than those who didn't get the lessons, even up to five months later. They were also much more likely to act on their feelings, writing 80 percent more thank-you notes for a school event than the control group. 'Now we're talking actual behavior,' says Froh, who notes that the research shows that such benefits are generally most pronounced in children who start out with a less sunny attitude. 'Generally speaking, it's like anything else: It takes time and energy to raise grateful kids, but if you make it a priority, it is doable, and the payoff can be enormous in terms of healthier, more balanced young people,' says clinical psychologist Eleanor Mackey of Children's National Medical Center. Some expert advice: • Parents need to be good role models when it comes to expressing appreciation, whether that means thanking strangers for holding the door or thanking your son or daughter for a chore done without being asked. • Froh recommends helping kids to make a list of all the good things in their own lives to be thankful for. • Take small kids to drop off presents at a local hospital or animal-rescue league; older ones can volunteer at organizations around the area, although simply lending a hand to an elderly neighbor who needs help shoveling snow or grocery shopping can be just as impactful, says Mackey. All that said, there will still be times when kids falter. 'Don't expect a 2-year-old or even a 5-year-old and certainly a teenager to do it all the time, or to get it right away,' says Mackey." - Carolyn Butler
