  Quotations - Evolve
[Quote No.53290] Need Area: Mind > Evolve
"It is not what a man gets but what a man is [as in his character], that he should think of. He should first think of his character, and then of his condition. He that has character need have no fear of his condition. Character will draw conditions after it. [This applies equally to any woman.]" - Henry Ward Beecher

[Quote No.53307] Need Area: Mind > Evolve
"[The following insight about the values of negatives in our lives has huge ramifications in all need-areas of life, but especially - learning, persisting, evolving(!), gratitude, satisfaction, anticipation:-] A problem, believe it or not, is always great news at least in that it motivates you to face and solve that problem – in the same way that as expressed in the saying, ‘Need is the mother of invention (as in creativity in scientific and cultural evolution)’. In facing that problem you develop empathy and compassion for other sufferers of that problem and sufferers of problems in general. That improves your human understanding and that in turn improves your imaginative empathy with others and from that you improve your ability to apply love’s ‘Golden Rule’ of treating others in the way you imagine you would want to be treated in that same situation. Also in facing and trying to solve that problem you will need to examine it carefully and try many possible solutions. Whether they work or not you will learn and grow in experience and wisdom. That then becomes another huge benefit of the problem." - Ben O'Grady

[Quote No.53360] Need Area: Mind > Evolve
"[Poem: about expecting to continually get better - certainly wiser - and therefore more appreciated as grow older, like fine wine gets better with age]

'Let Me Grow Lovely'

Let me grow lovely, growing old -
So many fine things do;
Laces, and ivory, and gold,
And silks need not be new;

And there is healing in old trees,
Old streets a glamour hold;
Why may not I, as well as these,
Grow lovely, growing old?

" - Karle Wilson Baker
(1878–1960) (Mrs.) Karle Wilson Baker was an American poet and author, born in Little Rock, Arkansas.

[Quote No.53576] Need Area: Mind > Evolve
"What Do You Say to Yourself After Someone Criticizes You? Imagine that someone criticizes you. Then imagine yourself feeling joyful about this wonderful opportunity to learn something positive from the criticism. Imagine that you love to hear feedback about what you've said and done or didn't say and do. Positive feedback means that you are on track. Critical feedback means that you can now improve and develop yourself. Imagine that your self-talk sounds like, 'I appreciate and am grateful for this wonderful opportunity to become better. I am grateful to this person for telling me something that will be beneficial for me.' If you actually respond to criticism this way, congratulations! It shows that you have integrated one of the elevated qualities listed in the 48 factors to acquire Torah. If you are like most people, however, you don't think of critical feedback as one of your greatest pleasures in life. But if you have the inner strength, courage, and honesty to be open to hearing criticism, you will grow more in life. So what can you say to yourself if you have not yet mastered the ability to love criticism? One possibility is: 'My goal is to constantly grow and develop myself [Evolve into my best self]. I love positive feedback. But I can grow from critical feedback. So I will increase my inner strength, courage, and honesty to be open to hear what people say, and to weigh what they say objectively.' You don't have to feel bad about yourself because someone gave you critical feedback. [We are all growing as people and because of this criticism you are now in a position to be better tomorrow than you are today and were yesterday.]" - Rabbi Zelig Pliskin
From his book, 'Conversations With Yourself', pp.174-5.

"A noble and Godlike character is not a thing of favor or chance, but is the natural result of continued effort in right thinking, the effect of long-cherished association with Godlike thoughts. An ignoble and bestial character, by the same process, is the result of the continued harboring of groveling thoughts." - James Allen

[Quote No.53767] Need Area: Mind > Evolve
"[Benjamin Franklin, the statesman, polymath, and United States' founding father, came up with a system for self-mastery - character development, self-growth, personal 'evolution' - that is worth taking a serious look at if you're interested in getting better at anything in life. First, for those who are unfamiliar with Franklin's accomplishments, he was a leading author, printer, political theorist, politician, postmaster, scientist, musician, inventor, satirist, civic activist, statesman, and diplomat. As a scientist, he was a major figure in the American enlightenment and the history of physics for his discoveries and theories regarding electricity. He invented the lightning rod, bifocals, the Franklin stove, a carriage odometer and the glass armonica. He facilitated many civic organisations, including a fire department and a university. But the young Ben Franklin was a bit rough around the edges, prone to vehemently arguing his case in all matters and alienating colleagues. Fortunately, he realised he needed to do something about this tendency, so he decided to work on developing more amenable character traits. Despite considerable application, however, as soon as he tried, he became overwhelmed by the magnitude of the task. After much rumination, Franklin posited that it may work better to focus on improving just one thing at a time, rather than try and work on everything at once. So he selected 13 character traits that he believed were important for business and social success, and resolved to focus on just one of these for a week at a time, leaving all others to chance. He would each evening of that week review his day to see how he had handled himself in regard to the 13 virtues with special awareness of that week's focus, with a desire to see progress in the reduction of the number of transgressions, missed opportunities, etc., and therefore the improvement in his character. The following week he moved to the next characteristic and he continued thus until he had covered all of them, taking 13 weeks to complete the exercise. At this point, Franklin went back to the first week's aspect and started repeating the cycle. These four cycles fitted perfectly into the year. The virtues Franklin defined in 1741, in his own words (plus his added commentary) were:] --- Temperance. Eat not to dullness; drink not to elevation. --- Silence. Speak not but what may benefit others or yourself; avoid trifling conversation. --- Order. Let all your things have their places; let each part of your business have its time. --- Resolution. Resolve to perform what you ought; perform without fail what you resolve. --- Frugality. Make no expense but to do good to others or yourself; i.e., waste nothing. --- Industry. Lose no time; be always employ'd in something useful; cut off all unnecessary actions. --- Sincerity. Use no hurtful deceit; think innocently and justly, and, if you speak, speak accordingly. --- Justice. Wrong none by doing injuries, or omitting the benefits that are your duty. --- Moderation. Avoid extreams; forbear resenting injuries so much as you think they deserve. --- Cleanliness. Tolerate no uncleanliness in body, cloaths, or habitation. --- Tranquillity. Be not disturbed at trifles, or at accidents common or unavoidable. --- Chastity. Rarely use venery but for health or offspring, never to dulness, weakness, or the injury of your own or another's peace or reputation. --- Humility. Imitate Jesus and Socrates. [Franklin achieved extraordinary success. In his autobiography he said that he felt that his greatest contribution to posterity, and the one that he wished most fervently his progeny would heed, was his system for self-mastery.] It may be well my posterity should be informed that to this little artifice, with the blessing of God, their ancestor ow'd the constant felicity of his life, down to his 79th year, in which this is written....I hope, therefore, that some of my descendants may follow the example and reap the benefit." - Ben Franklin
The quote above is from his book, 'The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin'. [The introduction above is from the excellent article 'What teachers can learn from Benjamin Franklin: a step-by-step approach' by Tom Cassidy - Refer http://www.theguardian.com/teacher-network/teacher-blog/2014/jan/14/teachers-learn-benjamin-franklin-step-by-step-teaching-practice-improvement ]

[Quote No.54281] Need Area: Mind > Evolve
"[A true story - with a message about the importance of challenges:-] 'No Problems Could Be A Problem' Don't worry if you have problems! Which is easy to say until you are in the midst of a really big one, I know. But the only people I am aware of who don't have troubles are gathered in little neighbourhoods. Most cities and villages have at least one. We call them cemeteries. If you're breathing, you have difficulties. It's the way of life. And believe it or not, most of your problems may actually be good for you! Let me explain. Maybe you have seen the Great Barrier Reef, stretching some 1,800 miles from New Guinea to Australia. Tour guides regularly take visitors to view the reef. On one tour, the guide was asked an interesting question. 'I notice that the lagoon side of the reef looks pale and lifeless, while the ocean side is vibrant and colourful,' a traveller observed. 'Why is that?' The guide gave an interesting answer: 'The coral around the lagoon side is in still water, with no challenge for its survival. It dies early. The coral on the ocean side is constantly being tested by wind, waves, and storms -- surges of power. It has to fight for survival every day of its life. As it is challenged and tested it changes and adapts. It grows healthy. It grows strong. And it reproduces.' Then he added this telling note: 'That's the way it is with every living organism.' That's how it is with people. Challenged and tested, we come alive! Like coral pounded by the sea, we grow. Physical demands can cause us to grow stronger. Mental and emotional stress can produce tough-mindedness and resiliency. Spiritual testing can produce strength of character and faithfulness. So, you have problems -- no problem! Just tell yourself, 'There I grow again; stronger and more powerful!'" - Unknown

[Quote No.54289] Need Area: Mind > Evolve
"[A true story - with a message about the importance of challenges:] 'No Problems Could Be A Problem - Fresh Fish!' The Japanese have always loved fresh fish. But the waters close to Japan have not held many fish for decades. So to feed the Japanese population, fishing boats got bigger and went farther than ever. The farther the fishermen went, the longer it took to bring in the fish. If the return trip took more than a few days, the fish were not fresh. The Japanese did not like the taste. To solve this problem, fishing companies installed freezers on their boats. They would catch the fish and freeze them at sea. Freezers allowed the boats to go farther and stay longer. However, the Japanese could taste the difference between fresh and frozen and they did not like frozen fish. The frozen fish brought a lower price. So fishing companies installed fish tanks. They would catch the fish and stuff them in the tanks, fin to fin. After a little thrashing around, the fish stopped moving. They were tired and dull, but alive. Unfortunately, the Japanese could still taste the difference. Because the fish did not move for days, they lost their fresh-fish taste. The Japanese preferred the lively taste of fresh fish, not sluggish fish. So how did Japanese fishing companies solve this problem? How do they get fresh-tasting fish to Japan? If you were consulting the fish industry, what would you recommend? How Japanese Fish Stay Fresh: To keep the fish tasting fresh, the Japanese fishing companies still put the fish in the tanks. But now they add a small shark to each tank. The shark eats a few fish, but most of the fish arrive in a very lively state. The fish are challenged. Have you realized that some of us are also living in a pond but most of the time we are tired and dull, so we need a Shark in our life to keep us awake and moving? Basically in our lives Sharks are new challenges to keep us active and fitter.....The more intelligent, persistent and competent you are, the more you enjoy a challenge. If your challenges are the correct size, and if you are steadily conquering those challenges, you are a Conqueror. You think of your challenges and get energized. You are excited to try new solutions. You have fun. You are alive! You experiment, learn, act, grow and reach more of your best potential self." - Unknown

"[A story - with a message about each individual's real potential and how we cannot judge it by circumstances or past achievements:] - 'The Eagle' - Once a farmer found an abandoned eagle's nest and in it was an egg still warm. He took the egg back to his farm and laid it in the nest of one of his hens. The egg hatched and the baby eagle grew up along with the other chickens. It pecked about the farmyard, scrabbling for grain. It spent its life within the yard and rarely looked up. When it was very old, one day it lifted up its head and saw above it a wonderful sight - an eagle soaring high above in the sky. Looking at it, the old creature sighed and said to itself, ‘If only I'd been born an eagle’." - Unknown
This is an adaptation of an Anthony de Mello story.

"Perfection is characterised by one's ability to see the self by the pure mind and to relish and rejoice in the self. In that joyous state, one is situated in boundless spiritual happiness, realised through transcendental senses. Established thus, one never departs from the truth, and upon gaining this he thinks there is no greater gain. Being so situated, one is never shaken even in the midst of greatest difficulty. This indeed is actual freedom from all miseries arising from material contact." - Bhagavad-Gita [Hindu]
6.20–23 - The famous Bhagavad-Gita or 'Song of the Lord', is actually a book within the epic Hindu poem, the Mahabharata, as the battle of Kurukshetra begins. When Arjuna faces his cousins on the field of battle, he despairs and sinks down, unable to fight. The Bhagavad-Gita contains the words that Krishna spoke to Arjuna at that moment.

"[Freedom, individualism, and being yourself, so long as it doesn't hurt another's physical person or property:] Trying to be perfect may be inevitable for people who are smart and ambitious and interested in the world and its good opinion.... What is really hard, and really amazing, is giving up on being perfect and beginning the work of becoming yourself!" - Anna Quindlen

[Quote No.55568] Need Area: Mind > Evolve
"One reason we can change our brains simply by imagining is that, from a neuroscientific point of view, imagining an act and doing it are not as different as they sound! When people close their eyes and visualize a simple object, such as the letter a, the primary visual cortex lights up, just as it would if the subjects were actually looking at the letter a. Brain scans show that in action and imagination many of the same parts of the brain are activated. That is why visualizing can improve performance. ...imagining an act engages the same motor and sensory programs that are involved in doing it. We have long viewed our imaginative life with a kind of sacred awe: as noble, pure, immaterial, and ethereal, cut off from our material brain. Now we cannot be so sure about where to draw the line between them. Everything your 'immaterial' mind imagines leaves material traces. Each thought alters the physical state of your brain synapses at a microscopic level. Each time you imagine moving your fingers across the keys to play the piano, you alter the tendrils in your living brain!" - Dr. Norman Doidge
Quote from his book, 'The Brain That Changes Itself: Stories of Personal Triumph from the Frontiers of Brain Science'.

[Quote No.55603] Need Area: Mind > Evolve
"[Individualism - Be authentic, keep growing into your best self:] Pinocchio went out into the world. He went on his road filled with good intentions, with a vision. He went ready to do all the things he dreamed, but he was pulled this way and that. He was distracted. He faltered. He made mistakes. But he kept on. Pinocchio, in the end, became himself - because the little flame inside him, no matter what crap he went through, would not be extinguished. We are all Pinocchio. And do you know what I found after several decades of life? We are Pinocchio over and over again - we achieve our goal, we become a level of ourselves, and then we want to go further. And we make new mistakes, and we have new hardships, but we prevail. We are human." - Patti Smith
