[Quote No.45730] Need Area: Work > Leadership
"'Rent seeking' is one of the most important insights in the last fifty years of economics and, unfortunately, one of the most inappropriately labeled [as 'privilege-seeking' is more clearly descriptive]. Gordon Tullock originated the idea in 1967, and Anne Krueger introduced the label in 1974. The idea is simple but powerful. People [i.e. special interest groups] are said to seek rents [special privileges, unequal benefits] when they try [through 'incentives', media pressure and direct lobbying by lobbyists, groups and individuals] to obtain benefits for themselves through the political arena [where politicians compete for votes and financial support rather than just in the free market where businesses compete to best meet the needs and desires of the consumers of their products and services]. They typically do so by getting [governments and politicians for their self-interest to use their power to intervene in the choices that individual consumers make in the free market through laws and regulations, always described as 'for the public good', for example by a targeted tax,] a subsidy for a good they produce or for being in a particular class of people, by getting a tariff on a good they produce, or by getting a special regulation that hampers their competitors. Elderly people, for example, often seek higher Social Security payments; steel producers often seek restrictions on imports of steel; and licensed electricians and doctors often lobby to keep regulations in place that restrict competition from unlicensed electricians or doctors... [Often people argue that they need to circumvent the free market because businesses are for their self-interested profit and that politicians aren't, which is often true as politicians are more into the business of their self-interested power to create the world they and their supporters want and keep their political job and increase their power, position and reimbursement rather than just money. Any economic forecasting to have any chance of being accurate must take into account the way this form of political intervention to gain and maintain power and to be seen to be helping their supporters can effect the economy. In summary then] economists mean by 'rent seeking' ...lobbying of government to give them special privileges. A much better term is 'privilege seeking' [which is the beginning of enabling greater political totalitarianism at the expense of individual freedom, for example as 'crony capitalism' rather than free market capitalism. 'Rent-seeking' - 'privilege-seeking' - that enables greater political totalitarianism is a danger to effective political democracy and the legal principle of equality before the law]!" - David R. Henderson
Editor of the Concise Encyclopedia of Economics. He is a research fellow with Stanford Universityís Hoover Institution and an associate professor of economics at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. He was formerly a senior economist with President Ronald Reaganís Council of Economic Advisers.

[Quote No.46149] Need Area: Work > Leadership
"I received some great advice from Marshall Goldsmith, one of the preeminent authorities in the field of leadership. He told me this: 'If you want to be an effective leader, listen to and accept with humility the feedback that comes from your team.' The most fundamental commitment you have to make as a leader is to humbly listen to the input of others, take it seriously, and work to improve. Again, it sounds simple, but itís not easy. Leadership, as Marshall always says, is a contact sport, and one has to constantly ask for and respond to advice from colleagues so you can improve." - Jim Kim

"As a startup founder I can honestly say I have lost track of how many times Iíve wanted to quit. The job is simply too hard not to regularly feel dispirited. Throughout these trials and tribulations I have found the best place to turn for counsel is from those who have gone before me as fellow travelers on the entrepreneurship path. ... Through their words and deeds, through the stories they shared and the feelings they bared, they taught me that regardless of how bad things might be, I should always remember how insanely lucky I am to get to do this and I should enjoy it while I can." - Zach Coelius

[Quote No.46162] Need Area: Work > Leadership
"Probably the first piece of advice that really resonated with me was from an old guy that was selling a business to my parents when I was about sixteen years old. [He said that] if someone ever asks you if you can do something and is willing to provide you an opportunity, just jump on it. You can figure out how to deliver after you get the job! I didn't go to CEO school. I just seized the opportunity and then figured out what to do later. Too many capable people limit their options because they think they don't have enough experience or feel that they need to work their way up the corporate ladder by visiting every single rung on the way up. Too many people tell me that their dream is to leave their boring cog in the machine day job and start their own business, but they couldn't possibly think of doing that because they've never had experience running one Ė well that's a bit chicken and egg! Carpe diem! The time is now! Time and tide waits for no man. No one is going to hand you your future on a plate. [Responsibility and leadership usually go to the person who just steps out of the crowd and does it. Leadership is not usually given by anyone except yourself and your ability, which at best sweeps others up in your wake, with them eagerly following.]" - Matt Barrie
