[Quote No.29656] Need Area: Body > Health
"Even if you don't adopt good health habits until well into middle age, a new study shows that it's still worth your while to do so. The study, published in the American Journal of Medicine, tracked nearly 16,000 adults aged 45 to 64 for six years. The participants who practiced healthy lifestyle habits reduced their risk of heart disease and premature death (from all causes) during that time. Those habits included eating more than five servings of vegetables and fruits daily, exercising for at least 2-1/2 hours a week, not smoking, and maintaining a healthy weight. It's interesting to note that only about 1,300 participants had been practicing the four healthy lifestyle habits before entering the study. And only about 1,000 adopted them during the course of the study (though all participants were given the opportunity to do so). But within four years, the 'late-starters' had caught up to the people who had been practicing those behaviors all along. Though the majority of the study participants didn't take advantage of the opportunity to change their habits, you can be different. Do it gradually and it will be painless. Maybe add an extra serving of vegetables to your menu this week and another serving next week. Then add a 15-minute walk each day the week after that. Whatever you do, don't think 'It's too late for me now.' This study shows it's never too late to benefit from making healthy lifestyle changes." - James B. LaValle

[Quote No.29774] Need Area: Body > Health
"[Elizabeth Kübler-Ross identified a grief cycle that occurs when people realize they have a terminal illness. It also happens when they face other changes, especially loss and death. This has become the predominant way for counsellors and professionals to approach grief, loss, tragedy and traumatic experiences. It has been found to help people understand the emotions all the effected people are going through:] -1st- Shock stage: Initial paralysis at hearing the bad news. -2nd- Denial stage: Trying to avoid the inevitable. -3rd- Anger stage: Frustrated outpouring of bottled-up emotion. -4th- Bargaining stage: Seeking in vain for a way out. -5th- Depression stage: Final realization of the inevitable. -6th- Testing stage: Seeking realistic solutions. -7th- Acceptance stage: Finally finding the way forward." - Elizabeth Kübler-Ross

[Quote No.30588] Need Area: Body > Health
"Nothing happens fast enough these days. Lights stay red too long. Pizza takes too long to get delivered. And television commercial breaks are getting longer and longer. So when researchers discovered that 10 minutes of walking done three times per day could improve your health, it's not surprising that people demanded results in even less time. Well, now researchers from the UK have found that shorter bouts of brisk walking reduce postprandial plasma triacylglycerol (the level of fat in your blood after you eat) and resting blood pressure in healthy young men. And this will probably work even better for out of shape folks who have a few extra years - and inches - under their belts. The subjects did 10 3-minute bouts of fast walking in one session and one 30-minute bout of fast walking in another session, both after eating a high-fat meal. And the results were the same. The 10 short walks and the one long walk reduced post-meal triacylglerol levels by 16 percent compared to the control session (where they did no exercise after the meal). Both forms of exercise also reduced systolic blood pressure by 6-7 percent compared to the control. So get your butt off the couch as much as possible and move it. Even short little speed-walks, when they add up, can help your heart." - Craig Ballantyne

[Quote No.31261] Need Area: Body > Health
"Your blood pressure is important to know, because high blood pressure increases your risk of kidney disease, heart disease and stroke. Blood pressure is the force of the blood pushing against the artery walls as it circulates around the body driven by the heart. With every heartbeat, blood pressure rises to a peak, called the systolic pressure. Between beats, pressure falls, which is called the diastolic pressure. Blood presure is discussed using these two measures - systolic then diastolic. Normal is considered below 120:80. High blood pressure is over 140:90. It is one of the things you should ask your doctor to check at your yearly physicals. Diet, rest and exercise are important factors in controlling your blood pressure and your doctor should be able to give you advice regarding this if your blood pressure is higher than normal." - Seymour@imagi-natives.com

[Quote No.31262] Need Area: Body > Health
"A simple way to estimate your health risk from body fat is to take your waist measurement, at the mid-point between the bottom of the ribcage and the top of the hip bone. For a woman aged 18-64, a healthy waist measurement is less than 80cm. A measurement of more than 90 cm may indicate significantly increased risk. For a woman aged 18-64, a healthy waist measurement is less than 94cm. A measurement of more than 100 cm may indicate significantly increased risk." - Seymour@imagi-natives.com

"Let me quickly recommend to my readers [of his financial analysis] that they get serious annual physicals. At the Cleveland Clinic this week I saw seven doctors in one and a half days, and went through some serious poking and prodding. The program was tailored to my needs, as it is different for every person. You see professionals who are geared to your physical challenges. They make all the arrangements, and a staff person walks you into see the doctors, who are on very tight schedules. The advantage of the Cleveland Clinic is that they are very oriented toward helping you not get sick in the first place. I am turning 60 this year, and I want to be active for a very long time. You have to be proactive. [about your health, especially from 40 years old onward.]" - John Mauldin

[Quote No.32579] Need Area: Body > Health
"But if all are agreed as to the blessing of health, there are many who will not take the little trouble, or submit to the slight sacrifices, necessary to maintain it. Many, indeed, deliberately ruin their own health, and incur the certainty of an early grave, or an old age of suffering. No doubt some inherit a constitution which renders health almost unattainable... But happily these cases are exceptional. Most of us might be well, if we would. It is very much our own fault that we are ill. We do those things which we ought not to do, and we leave undone those things which we ought to have done, and then we wonder there is no health in us." - Sir John Lubbock
