[Quote No.42458] Need Area: Fun > Art
"Art is individualism, and individualism is a disturbing and disintegrating force. There lies its immense value. For what it seeks is to disturb monotony of type, slavery of custom, tyranny of habit, and the reduction of man to the level of a machine. [It seeks to show new perspectives and other choices. It is a way to help expand and liberate the consciousness; our experiences, understandings, imaginings, options and thereby our lives.]" - Oscar Wilde

[Quote No.42459] Need Area: Fun > Art
"Art is the most intense mode of Individualism that the world has known. I am inclined to say that it is the only real mode of Individualism that the world has known. Crime, which, under certain conditions, may seem to have created Individualism, must take cognisance of other people and interfere with them [and their property]. It belongs to the sphere of action. But alone, without any reference to his neighbours, without any interference, the artist can fashion a beautiful thing; and if he does not do it solely for his own pleasure, he is not an artist at all." - Oscar Wilde

[Quote No.42469] Need Area: Fun > Art
"...whenever a community or a powerful section of a community, or a government of any kind, attempts to dictate to the artist what he is to do, Art either entirely vanishes, or becomes stereotyped, or degenerates into a low and ignoble form of craft. A work of art is the unique result of a unique temperament. Its beauty comes from the fact that the author is what he is. It has nothing to do with the fact that other people want what they want. Indeed, the moment that an artist takes notice of what other people want, and tries to supply the demand, he ceases to be an artist, and becomes a dull or an amusing craftsman, an honest or a dishonest tradesman. He has no further claim to be considered as an artist. Art is the most intense mode of Individualism that the world has known. I am inclined to say that it is the only real mode of Individualism that the world has known. Crime, which, under certain conditions, may seem to have created Individualism, must take cognisance of other people and interfere with them. It belongs to the sphere of action. But alone, without any reference to his neighbours, without any interference, the artist can fashion a beautiful thing; and if he does not do it solely for his own pleasure, he is not an artist at all." - Oscar Wilde

[Quote No.42473] Need Area: Fun > Art
"[The best art is about individualism, free self-expression and realising a unique, imaginative perspective:] What is a healthy, or an unhealthy work of art? All terms that one applies to a work of art, provided that one applies them rationally, have reference to either its style or its subject, or to both together. From the point of view of style, a healthy work of art is one whose style recognises the beauty of the material it employs, be that material one of words or of bronze, of colour or of ivory, and uses that beauty as a factor in producing the aesthetic effect. From the point of view of subject, a healthy work of art is one the choice of whose subject is conditioned by the temperament of the artist, and comes directly out of it. In fine, a healthy work of art is one that has both perfection and personality. Of course, form and substance cannot be separated in a work of art; they are always one. But for purposes of analysis, and setting the wholeness of aesthetic impression aside for a moment, we can intellectually so separate them. An unhealthy work of art, on the other hand, is a work whose style is obvious, old-fashioned, and common, and whose subject is deliberately chosen, not because the artist has any pleasure in it, but because he thinks that the public will pay him for it." - Oscar Wilde

[Quote No.42538] Need Area: Fun > Art
"[Freedom of thought, speech, expression, press and censorship:- ] Letting a hundred flowers blossom and a hundred schools of thought contend is the policy for promoting the progress of the arts and the sciences and a flourishing socialist culture in our land. Different forms and styles in art should develop freely and different schools in science should contend freely. We think that it is harmful to the growth of art and science if administrative measures are used to impose one particular style of art or school of thought and to ban another. Questions of right and wrong in the arts and sciences should be settled through free discussion in artistic and scientific circles and through practical work in these fields. They should not be settled in summary fashion." - Chairman Mao Zedong (also transliterated as Mao Tse-tung)

[Quote No.42549] Need Area: Fun > Art
"Art must make its own way and by its own means [rather than being dictated by the state for its own political gain]." - Leon Trotsky
(1879 – 1940), born Lev Davidovich Bronshtein, he was a Russian Marxist revolutionary and theorist, Soviet politician, and the founder and first leader of the Red Army. He joined the Bolsheviks immediately prior to the 1917 October Revolution, and eventually became a leader within the Party. During the early days of the Soviet Union, he served first as People's Commissar for Foreign Affairs and later as the founder and commander of the Red Army as People's Commissar of Military and Naval Affairs. He was a major figure in the Bolshevik victory in the Russian Civil War (1918–20). He was also among the first members of the Politburo. After leading a failed struggle of the Left Opposition against the policies and rise of Joseph Stalin in the 1920s and the increasing role of bureaucracy in the Soviet Union, Trotsky was successively removed from power, expelled from the Communist Party, deported from the Soviet Union and assassinated on Stalin's orders. An early advocate of Red Army intervention against European fascism, Trotsky also opposed Stalin's non-aggression pact with Adolf Hitler in the late 1930s. As the head of the Fourth International, Trotsky continued in exile to oppose the Stalinist bureaucracy in the Soviet Union, and was eventually assassinated in Mexico, by Ramón Mercader, a Spanish-born Soviet agent. Trotsky's ideas form the basis of Trotskyism, a major school of Marxist thought that is opposed to the theories of Stalinism. [Quote No.42552] Need Area: Fun > Art
"The ancient philosopher said that strife is the father of all things. No new values can be created where a free conflict of ideas is impossible. To be sure, a [socialist-communist] revolutionary dictatorship means by its very essence strict limitations of freedom. But for that very reason epochs of revolution have never been directly favorable to cultural creation: they have only cleared the arena for it. The dictatorship of the proletariat [and the increased equality of income and free time it aims to achieve] opens a wider scope to human genius the more it ceases to be a dictatorship. [Individual self-expression only increases when individual freedom increases.] The socialist culture will flourish only in proportion to the dying away of the state [and its dictatorial power and privilege]." - Leon Trotsky

[Quote No.42553] Need Area: Fun > Art
"Generally speaking, art is an expression of man’s need for an harmonious and complete life, that is to say, his need for those major benefits of which [socialism and communism believes] a society of classes has deprived him. That is why a protest against reality, either conscious or unconscious, active or passive, optimistic or pessimistic, always forms part of a really creative piece of work. Every new tendency in art has begun with rebellion." - Leon Trotsky

In Italy he is known as 'il Sommo Poeta' ('the Supreme Poet') or just 'il Poeta'. Dante, Petrarch, and Boccaccio are also known as 'the three fountains' or 'the three crowns'. Dante is also called the 'Father of the Italian language'. Quote from his play the 'Divine Comedy'. Author's Info on Wikipedia - Author on ebay - Author on Amazon - More Quotes by this Author

"I have always said and felt that true enjoyment [or any emotion, in fact any subjective experience] cannot be described [and shared fully as it is too subjectively intertwined in the moment and the makeup of that unique person and then altered as it is filtered through the past experiences of the audience. However the attempt is important and helpful for all concerned]!" - Jean-Jacques Rousseau
(1712 – 1778), Franco-Swiss philosopher of the Enlightenment whose political ideas influenced the French Revolution, the development of socialist theory, and the growth of nationalism.
