[Quote No.58154] Need Area: Mind > Persist
"[Use distraction - focus on something else - to avoid and overcome negative emotions and to not act on negative ideas and images:] A painful notion takes hold of me; I find it quicker to change it than to subdue it. I substitute a contrary one for it, or, if I cannot, at all events a different one. Variation always solaces, dissolves, and dissipates. If I cannot combat it, I escape it; and in fleeing I dodge, I am tricky!" - Michel de Montaigne
In his essay 'Of Diversion'.

[Quote No.58197] Need Area: Mind > Persist
"[The power of imagination, focus and self-discipline for directing your life and controlling your emotions, for good and bad:-] ... First thing back in Milwaukee, I reported to my parole officer, a Mr Rand, I think. After asking a thousand questions and filling out a mountain of papers he gave me an I.Q. Test. When he computed my score his sea-blue eyes saucered in surprise. He couldn't understand how a boy with a score of one hundred and seventy-five could do a stupid thing like peddling a girl's ass on the sidewalk. [Genius IQ is generally considered to begin around 140 to 145, representing 0.25% of the population (1 in 400). Here's a rough guide: 115-124 - Above average (e.g., university students), 125-134 - Gifted (e.g., post-graduate students), 135-144 - Highly gifted (e.g., intellectuals), 145-154 - Genius (e.g., professors), 155-164 - Genius (e.g., Nobel Prize winners), 165-179 - High genius, 180-200 - Highest genius, >200 - 'Unmeasurable genius', Albert Einstein was considered to 'only' have an IQ of about 160. Refer http://www.wilderdom.com/intelligence/IQWhatScoresMean.html ] ... I was eighteen now, six feet two inches tall, slender, sweet. And stupid. ... [Later] I got two years [twenty-four months] in State Prison for Grand Theft, the amount, five-hundred dollars. My parole was to run concurrently with the new sentence. ... The Waupun State Prison was tough, but in a different way than the reformatory. Here the cons were older. Many of them were murderer's serving life sentences. ... I worked in the laundry. I kept my clothing fresh and neat. It was in the laundry that I met the first man from whom I got cunning to balance my hardness. He was an old Drag man with his bit [sentence] getting short [nearing completion]. He was the first to attempt to teach me to control my emotions. He would say, 'Always remember whether you be sucker or hustler in the world out there, you've got that vital edge if you can iron-clad your feelings. I picture the human mind as a movie screen. If you're a dopey sucker, you'll just sit and watch all kinds of mind-wrecking, damn fool movies on that screen.' He said. 'Son, there is no reason except a stupid one for anybody to project on that screen anything that will worry him or dull that vital edge. After all, we are the absolute bosses of that whole theatre and show in our minds. We even write the script. So always write positive, dynamic scripts and show only the best movies for you on that screen whether you are pimp or priest.' His rundown of his screen theory saved my sanity many years later. He was a twisted wise man and one day wasn't looking, a movie flashed on the screen. The title was 'Death For An Old Con.' He died in his sleep behind the high gray walls. His fate was that that lives like a spectre with all cons. The fear of dying in a cell. I sure missed that convict philosopher. The wisdom he taught me took me successfully through my bit [sentence]. I was released after twenty-one months. I got three months good time for good conduct." - Robert 'Iceberg Slim' Beck
(1918 - 1992), Robert Beck, better known as Iceberg Slim, was an American pimp who subsequently became an influential author among a primarily African-American readership. Quote from his autobiography, ‘Pimp: The Story of My Life’, published 1967, pg. 38, 52-53.

"[Focus on what is positive rather than what is negative in order to enjoy life more, persist through difficulties better and longer and to recover from adversities quicker:] To paraphrase the bumper sticker, stuff happens. We cannot buffer ourselves from that stuff, but we can change the way we respond to it. Resilience is the rapidity with which we recover from adversity; some people recover slowly and other people recover more quickly. We know that individuals who show a more rapid recovery in certain key neural circuits have higher levels of well-being. They are protected in many ways from the adverse consequences of life's slings and arrows." - Dr. Richard Davidson

[Quote No.58692] Need Area: Mind > Persist
"[Poem:]

'COURAGE'

This is courage: to remain
Brave and patient under pain;
Cool and calm and firm to stay
In the presence of dismay;
Not to flinch when foes attack,
Even though you’re beaten back;
Still to cling to what is right,
When the wrong possesses might.

This is courage: to be true
To the best men see in you;
To remember, tempest-tossed,
Not to whimper, 'All is lost!'
But to battle to the end
While you still have strength to spend;
Not to cry that hope is gone
While you’ve life to carry on.

This is courage: to endure
Hurt and loss you cannot cure;
Patiently and undismayed,
Facing life still unafraid;
Glad to live and glad to take
Bravely for your children’s sake,
Burdens they would have to bear
If you fled and ceased to care.

[Quote No.58726] Need Area: Mind > Persist
"[A true story - with a message about persistence, the Golden Rule of treating others the way you'd like to be treated in the same situation and leading by example.] - Tetsugen Doko - Tetsugen, a devotee of Zen in Japan, decided to publish the sutras, which at that time were available only in Chinese. The books were to be printed with wood blocks in an edition of seven thousand copies, a tremendous undertaking. Tetsugen began by travelling and collecting donations for this purpose. A few sympathizers would give him a hundred pieces of gold, but most of the time he received only small coins. He thanked each donor with equal gratitude. After ten years Tetsugen had enough money to begin his task. It happened that at that time the Uji River overflowed. Famine followed. Tetsugen took the funds he had collected for the books and spent them to save others from starvation. Then he began again his work of collecting. Several years afterward an epidemic spread over the country. Tetsugen again gave away what he had collected. For a third time he started his work, and after twenty years his wish was fulfilled. The printing blocks which produced the first edition of sutras can be seen today in Obaku monastery in Kyoto. The Japanese tell their children that Tetsugen made three sets of sutras, and that the first two invisible sets surpass even the last." - wikipedia.org
Tetsugen Dōkō (1630 – 1682) was a Japanese Zen Master, and an important early leader of the Ōbaku school of Buddhism. Tetsugen was born in the seventh year of the Kan'ei era (1630) in Higo Province. He became a priest of the Jodo Shinshu sect at the age of 13. When Ingen came to Japan, Tetsugen became his follower in the Ōbaku school. In 1681, Tetsugen oversaw the production of the first complete woodcut edition (consisting of around 60,000 pieces) of the Chinese Buddhist sutras in Japan. Tetsugen died at the age of 53 in the second year of the Tenna era (1682). The anniversary of Tetsugen's birth is celebrated on January 1 in the Western calendar.
