[Quote No.51955] Need Area: Mind > Evolve
"[A poem:] -

'Lessons from an Oyster'

There once was an oyster,
Whose story I tell,
Who found that some sand,
Had got into his shell.

It was only a grain,
But it gave him great pain.
For oysters have feelings,
Although they are so plain.

Now, did he berate,
The harsh workings of fate,
That had brought him,
To such a deplorable state?

Did he curse at the government,
Cry for election,
And claim that the sea should,
Have given him protection?

'No,' he said to himself,
As he lay on a shell,
Since I cannot remove it,
I shall try to improve it.

Now the years have rolled around,
As the years always do,
And he came to his ultimate,
Destiny stew.

And the small grain of sand,
That had bothered him so,
Was a beautiful pearl,
All richly aglow.

Now the tale has a moral,
For isn't it grand,
What an oyster can do,
With a morsel of sand?

What couldn't we do,
If we'd only begin,
With some of the things,
That get under our skin.

"[A story - with a message about not dwelling on past mistakes but rather spending your time focusing on what you learnt and how that has made you better and more able to make the most of all the opportunities coming to you in the future:] - Arthur Gordon is a favorite writer of mine. Once he came to New York to interview Dr. Blanton, a co-founder of the American Foundation for Religion and Psychiatry. Mr. Gordon sat in a restaurant waiting for the esteemed psychiatrist to arrive. As he waited, his mind went back over his life. By the time Mr. Blanton arrived, Mr. Gordon was sitting there with a frown and a very sad look on his face. 'What's the matter, Arthur?' 'Oh,' the writer replied, 'I've just been sitting here thinking about all the 'if's in my life.' Dr. Blanton suggested, 'Let's drive over to my office after lunch; I want you to hear something.' Later in his office, Dr. Blanton put on a tape and said, 'I'm going to let you listen to three different people; they're all patients of mine and they are mentally ill. Listen carefully.' For one hour the great author listened. When the tape was finished , Dr. Blanton asked, 'Tell me what single trait all these people had in common.' Arthur Gordon thought a moment and then answered, 'I can't think of anything.' 'Then I'll tell you,' the psychiatrist said. 'All of them kept repeating the phrase, 'If only...if only...if only.' These words cause mental sickness! They are like poison. These people must learn to say, 'Next time...next time...next time.' These words point to the future, to a new day, to healing and health!' [Arthur Gordon, later in a book called 'A Touch of Wonder' he wrote, 'The trouble with 'if only' is that it doesn't change anything. It keeps the person facing the wrong way – backward instead of forward. It wastes time. ...You're thinking of failure as the enemy of success. But it isn't at all. Failure is a teacher – a harsh one, perhaps, but the best. You say you have a desk full of rejected manuscripts? That's great! Every one of those manuscripts was rejected for a reason. Have you pulled them to pieces looking for that reason? You've got to put failure to work for you. That's where you'll find success. On the far side of failure.']" - Unknown

"[A story - with a message about self-development.] - Daddy Doesn't Want to Play with Me! - Once there was a little boy who wanted his dad to teach him how to play catch. One sunny day the little boy's father was sitting on the couch, drinking a beer, while watching a baseball game. The boy rushed into the house exclaiming ‘Daddy, daddy, daddy, show me how to play catch!’ The father, blankly starring at the television screen, replied ‘ In a little while son, let me finish watching this inning, come back in five minutes.’ ‘Okay daddy’ said the boy and ran out of the room. Five minutes later the boy returned screaming ‘Daddy, let's go, let's play some catch now!’ The father turned to the boy and said hold on son the inning is not quite over come back in five more minutes. ‘Okay, daddy’ said the boy as he shuffled out the room. Five minutes later the boy returned ball and glove in hand eagerly awaiting for his father to play some catch. ‘Daddy, lets go, I want to be Ken Griffey Jr.!’ shouted the boy. By this time, the father had cracked open another cold one and another inning was taking place. Frustrated by the boy's constant hindrances, the dad scanned the room. While scanning the room the father notice a magazine underneath the coffee table. On the cover of the magazine was a large picture of the world. The father, who was angered & annoyed, began tearing the magazine cover in to small pieces. After a few moments, of shredding up the magazine cover, the father placed the torn pieces on the magazine. Then, the father turned to his boy and said ‘Son, once you put this picture of the world back together we can play catch, but do not interrupt me again until you are done!’ Apprehensively, the boy took the magazine and sulked into his room. As he sobbed ‘Okay, daddy I won't’. A few moments later the boy returned and said, ‘I'm done daddy can we play catch now?’ Stunned, the father glanced towards his child, and there in his small hands laid the magazine with the world pieced perfectly together. Amazed, the dad asked his child how he put the world together so quickly. ‘It was simple’ stated the boy ‘On the back of the world was a picture of a person, and once I put the person together that's when their world came together.’ " - Unknown

'Build a Better World'

"[A story - with a message about improving yourself to improve the world.] - Changing the World - When I was a young man, I wanted to change the world. I found it was difficult to change the world, so I tried to change my nation. When I found I couldn't change the nation, I began to focus on my town. I couldn't change the town and as an older man, I tried to change my family. Now, as an old man, I realize the only thing I can change is myself, and suddenly I realize that if long ago I had changed myself, I could have made an impact on my family. My family and I could have made an impact on our town. Their impact could have changed the nation and I could indeed have changed the world." - Unknown

[Quote No.52830] Need Area: Mind > Evolve
"Our deeds are recorded even to the smallest detail. The recording 'angel' is no myth; it is found in ourselves. It is the law of habit. We spend our lives writing our own biographies. Every act, word, and thought leaves an impression and a tendency that makes repetition easy. We are prone to imitate those about us but most of all we imitate ourselves. The doing of a thing once makes it easier to do it again in the same way; and the repetition becomes a habit, which is almost impossible to break. Habits determine character, therefore right character consists of right habit making." - Unknown

[Quote No.54281] Need Area: Mind > Evolve
"[A true story - with a message about the importance of challenges:-] 'No Problems Could Be A Problem' Don't worry if you have problems! Which is easy to say until you are in the midst of a really big one, I know. But the only people I am aware of who don't have troubles are gathered in little neighbourhoods. Most cities and villages have at least one. We call them cemeteries. If you're breathing, you have difficulties. It's the way of life. And believe it or not, most of your problems may actually be good for you! Let me explain. Maybe you have seen the Great Barrier Reef, stretching some 1,800 miles from New Guinea to Australia. Tour guides regularly take visitors to view the reef. On one tour, the guide was asked an interesting question. 'I notice that the lagoon side of the reef looks pale and lifeless, while the ocean side is vibrant and colourful,' a traveller observed. 'Why is that?' The guide gave an interesting answer: 'The coral around the lagoon side is in still water, with no challenge for its survival. It dies early. The coral on the ocean side is constantly being tested by wind, waves, and storms -- surges of power. It has to fight for survival every day of its life. As it is challenged and tested it changes and adapts. It grows healthy. It grows strong. And it reproduces.' Then he added this telling note: 'That's the way it is with every living organism.' That's how it is with people. Challenged and tested, we come alive! Like coral pounded by the sea, we grow. Physical demands can cause us to grow stronger. Mental and emotional stress can produce tough-mindedness and resiliency. Spiritual testing can produce strength of character and faithfulness. So, you have problems -- no problem! Just tell yourself, 'There I grow again; stronger and more powerful!'" - Unknown

"[A true story - with a message about the importance of challenges:] 'No Problems Could Be A Problem - Fresh Fish!' The Japanese have always loved fresh fish. But the waters close to Japan have not held many fish for decades. So to feed the Japanese population, fishing boats got bigger and went farther than ever. The farther the fishermen went, the longer it took to bring in the fish. If the return trip took more than a few days, the fish were not fresh. The Japanese did not like the taste. To solve this problem, fishing companies installed freezers on their boats. They would catch the fish and freeze them at sea. Freezers allowed the boats to go farther and stay longer. However, the Japanese could taste the difference between fresh and frozen and they did not like frozen fish. The frozen fish brought a lower price. So fishing companies installed fish tanks. They would catch the fish and stuff them in the tanks, fin to fin. After a little thrashing around, the fish stopped moving. They were tired and dull, but alive. Unfortunately, the Japanese could still taste the difference. Because the fish did not move for days, they lost their fresh-fish taste. The Japanese preferred the lively taste of fresh fish, not sluggish fish. So how did Japanese fishing companies solve this problem? How do they get fresh-tasting fish to Japan? If you were consulting the fish industry, what would you recommend? How Japanese Fish Stay Fresh: To keep the fish tasting fresh, the Japanese fishing companies still put the fish in the tanks. But now they add a small shark to each tank. The shark eats a few fish, but most of the fish arrive in a very lively state. The fish are challenged. Have you realized that some of us are also living in a pond but most of the time we are tired and dull, so we need a Shark in our life to keep us awake and moving? Basically in our lives Sharks are new challenges to keep us active and fitter.....The more intelligent, persistent and competent you are, the more you enjoy a challenge. If your challenges are the correct size, and if you are steadily conquering those challenges, you are a Conqueror. You think of your challenges and get energized. You are excited to try new solutions. You have fun. You are alive! You experiment, learn, act, grow and reach more of your best potential self." - Unknown

"[A story - with a message about each individual's real potential and how we cannot judge it by circumstances or past achievements:] - 'The Eagle' - Once a farmer found an abandoned eagle's nest and in it was an egg still warm. He took the egg back to his farm and laid it in the nest of one of his hens. The egg hatched and the baby eagle grew up along with the other chickens. It pecked about the farmyard, scrabbling for grain. It spent its life within the yard and rarely looked up. When it was very old, one day it lifted up its head and saw above it a wonderful sight - an eagle soaring high above in the sky. Looking at it, the old creature sighed and said to itself, ‘If only I'd been born an eagle’." - Unknown

[Quote No.54147] Need Area: Body > Health
"[A true story – with a message that inspires about courage, persistence and compassion for others and not letting health problems or disabilities stop you from trying to achieve your dreams:] Terrance Stanley ‘Terry’ Fox CC OD (July 28, 1958 – June 28, 1981) was a Canadian athlete, humanitarian, and cancer research activist. In 1980, with one leg having been amputated, he embarked on a cross-Canada run [The Marathon of Hope] to raise money and awareness for cancer research. Although the spread of his CANCER EVENTUALLY FORCED HIM TO END HIS QUEST AFTER 143 DAYS AND 5,373 KILOMETRES (3,339 MI), and ultimately cost him his life, his efforts resulted in a lasting, worldwide legacy. The annual Terry Fox Run, first held in 1981, has grown to involve millions of participants in over 60 countries and is now the world's largest one-day fundraiser for cancer research; over C$600 million has been raised in his name. Fox was a distance runner and basketball player for his Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, high school and Simon Fraser University. His right leg was amputated in 1977 after he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, though he continued to run using an artificial leg. He also played wheelchair basketball in Vancouver, winning three national championships. In 1980, he began the Marathon of Hope, a cross-country run to raise money for cancer research. He hoped to raise one dollar for each of Canada's 24 million people. He began with little fanfare from St. John's, Newfoundland in April and RAN THE EQUIVALENT OF A FULL MARATHON EVERY DAY. Fox had become a national star by the time he reached Ontario; he made numerous public appearances with businessmen, athletes, and politicians in his efforts to raise money. He was forced to end his run outside of Thunder Bay when the cancer spread to his lungs. His hopes of overcoming the disease and completing his marathon ended when he died nine months later. He was the youngest person ever named a Companion of the Order of Canada. He won the 1980 Lou Marsh Award as the nation's top sportsman and was named Canada's Newsmaker of the Year in both 1980 and 1981. Considered a national hero, he has had many buildings, roads and parks named in his honour across the country." - Unknown

"[A true story - with a message about persisting past difficulties, including health and wealth challenges, to find career success and go from 'rags-to-riches':] - Johnny Cash - Johnny Cash, the American country singer, was born in Arkansaw in 1932 during the American depression. Rural living was hard and the Cash family was dirt poor. His father rode the rails traveling the length and breath of the country by train in search of work. Johnny started working in the cotton fields at age five, singing along with his family while working. From the age of twelve he began playing and writing songs. Throughout his career he suffered from periods of severe drug addictions and was suicidal at least on one occasion. Despite this his work ethic was legendary and his contribution to music immense." - Unknown

"[Are you looking at how to be grateful that your life is not worse or bitter that your life is not better? Because it makes a big difference to how positive and happy your life will be! For example:] I met a person who was in a wheelchair. He related a story about how a person once asked if it was difficult to be confined to a wheelchair. He responded, 'I'm not confined to my wheelchair - I am liberated by it. If it wasn't for my wheelchair, I would be bed-bound and never able to leave my room or house.'" - Unknown

[Quote No.51545] Need Area: Body > Grooming
"[A story - with a message about appearance and content:] Balloons - There was a man who made his living selling balloons at a fair. He had all colors of balloons, including red, yellow and green. Whenever business was slow, he would release a helium filled balloon into the air and when the children saw it go up, they would all want to buy one. They would come up to him, buy a balloon and his sales would go up again. He continued this process each day. One day, he felt something tugging his jacket. He turned around and saw a little boy who asked, 'If you release a black balloon, would that also fly?' Moved by the boy's concern, the man replied with empathy. 'Son, it's not the color of the balloon, it’s what’s inside that makes it fly.’ The same thing applies in our lives. It’s not what we look like but what’s inside that counts." - Unknown

[Quote No.51965] Need Area: Body > Grooming
"[A story - with a message about appearances and inner beauty:] - World of Smiles - About ten years ago when I was an undergraduate in college, I was working as an intern at my University's Museum of Natural History. One day while working at the cash register in the gift shop, I saw an elderly couple come in with a little girl in a wheelchair. As I looked closer at this girl, I saw that she was kind of perched on her chair. I then realized she had no arms or legs, just a head, neck and torso. She was wearing a little white dress with red polka dots. As the couple wheeled her up to me I was looking down at the register. I turned my head toward the girl and gave her a wink. As I took the money from her grandparents, I looked back at the girl, who was giving me the cutest, largest smile I have ever seen. All of a sudden her handicap was gone and all I saw was this beautiful girl, whose smile just melted me and almost instantly gave me a completely new sense of what life is all about. She took me from a poor, unhappy college student and brought me into her world; a world of smiles, love and warmth. That was ten years ago. I'm a successful business person now and whenever I get down and think about the troubles of the world, I think about that little girl and the remarkable lesson about life that she taught me." - Unknown
