The text presents itself as a discourse given by the sage Manu, to a group of seers, or rishis, who beseech him, after the great floods, in the vedic state of 'Brahmavarta' some 10,000 years ago, to tell them, how to face such calamities and lead an organised life with the 'laws of all the social classes'.
