[Quote No.62491] Need Area: Friends > General
"There is a place for government in the affairs of men, and our Declaration of Independence tells us precisely what that place is. The role of government is to protect individuals in their God-given individual rights. Freedom [from force and fraud] is the natural birthright of man, but all that government can do in behalf of freedom is to let the individual alone, and it should secure him in his rights by making others let him alone." - Rev. Edmund A. Opitz
(1914-2006) American minister, author.

"America was founded on the principle of inalienable rights, not dictated duties. The Declaration of Independence states that every human being has a right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. It does not state that he is born a slave to the needs of others. [Prof. Aeon Skoble describes the difference between positive and negative rights. Fundamentally, positive rights require others to provide you with either a good or service. A negative right, on the other hand, only requires others to abstain from interfering with your actions.]" - Alex Epstein

"[Individual freedom and personal responsibility versus big, unlimited, paternalistic, interventionist, statist government:] I think it's time for us to declare our independence from an oppressive government that seeks to control our money and our lives in ways unimaginable to those who rebelled against the British Crown in 1776. Our revolution is peaceful, and it concentrates on winning hearts and minds one at a time. But it marches on. We must reclaim the spirit of independence every day and every night and intensify the struggle against those who seek to impose tyranny upon us." - Ron Paul
Libertarian, doctor and former U.S. politician. Quote from his article, 'We Must Declare Independence', July 2017. [http://www.ronpaulinstitute.org/archives/featured-articles/2017/july/03/we-must-declare-independence/ ]

"[Limited government because 'power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely':] It would be a dangerous delusion were a confidence in the men of our choice to silence our fears for the safety of our rights... Confidence is everywhere the parent of despotism. Free government is founded in jealousy, and not in confidence. It is jealousy and not confidence which prescribes limited constitutions, to bind down those whom we are obliged to trust with power... Our Constitution has accordingly fixed the limits to which, and no further, our confidence may go... In questions of power, then, let no more be heard of confidence in man, but bind him down from mischief by the chains of the Constitution." - Thomas Jefferson
Draft Kentucky Resolutions, 1798.

[This sentiment is echoed by Ben Franklin's statement, 'We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately.']" - Edmund Burke

"['Power corrupts and absolute (unlimited) power corrupts absolutely':] Power may justly be compared to a great river. While kept within its due bounds [to protect each individual's equal right to freedom from force or fraud] it is both beautiful and useful. But when it overflows its banks, it is then too impetuous to be stemmed; it bears down all before it, and brings destruction and desolation wherever it comes. If, then, this is the nature of power, let us at least do our duty, and like wise men who value freedom use our utmost care to support liberty, the only bulwark against lawless power..." - Andrew Hamilton

"[Small, limited government:] The mania for giving the Government power to meddle with the private affairs of cities or citizens is likely to cause endless trouble, through the rivaly of schools and creeds that are anxious to obtain official recognition, and there is great danger that our people will lose our independence of thought and action which is the cause of much of our greatness, and sink into the helplessness of the Frenchman or German who expects his government to feed him when hungry, clothe him when naked, to prescribe when his child may be born and when he may die, and, in time, to regulate every act of humanity from the cradle to the tomb, including the manner in which he may seek future admission to paradise." - Mark Twain

[Quote No.62667] Need Area: Friends > General
"[Politics:] Major parties have lived more for patronage than for principles; their goal has been to bind together a sufficiently large coalition of diverse interests to get into power; and once in power, to arrange sufficiently satisfactory compromises of interests to remain there. Minor parties have been attached to some special idea or interest, and they have generally expressed their positions through firm and identifiable programs and principles. Their function has not been to win or govern, but to agitate, educate, generate new ideas, and supply the dynamic element in our political life. When a third party's demands become popular enough, they are appropriated by one or both of the major parties and the third party disappears. Third parties are like bees: once they have stung, they die. " - Richard Hofstadter

[Quote No.62705] Need Area: Friends > General
"[Freedom, individualism and being yourself so long as you don't hurt another's physical person or property:-] Happiness in life is like a smorgasbord. If 100 people went to a smorgasbord and each put food on their plate in the quantity and mix that each felt would be most pleasing to him, every plate would be different. Even a husband and wife would go up to the smorgasbord and come back with plates that looked completely different. Happiness is the same way. Each person requires a particular combination of those ingredients to feel the very best about himself or herself. And your mix is changing continually. If you went to the same smorgasbord every day for a year, you probably would come back with a different plateful of food each time. Each day - sometimes each hour - only you can tell what it takes to make you happy. Therefore, the only way to judge whether a job, a relationship, an investment, or any decision, is right for you is to get in touch with your feelings and listen to your heart. [No-one else can do this for you as well as you can do it for yourself! This is the basis for the belief in the importance and value of individual freedom and personal responsibility over the alternative of freedom-reducing, paternal, interventionist, statist government!]" - Brian Tracy

[Quote No.62731] Need Area: Friends > General
"[Small, limited government:] Under our [US] Constitution, the federal government has delegated, enumerated and thus limited powers. Power is delegated by the founding generation or through subsequent amendment (that makes it legitimate); enumerated in the constitution (that makes it legal); and limited by that enumeration. As the 10th Amendment says, if a power hasn't been delegated, the federal government doesn't have it. For 150 years, that design held for the most part. When faced with a welfare bill in 1794, for example, James Madison, the principal author of the Constitution, rose in the House to say that he could find no constitutional authority for the bill. A century later, when Congress passed a similar measure, President Cleveland vetoed it as beyond Congress' authority. That all changed during the New Deal as both congress and the president sought to expand federal power. When the Supreme court objected, rather than amend the Constitution, Franklin D. Roosevelt tried to pack the court with six additional members. The scheme failed, but the threat worked. Thereafter, the court started reading the Constitution's General Welfare and Commerce Clauses so broadly that the doctrine of enumerated powers was essentially destroyed -- and with it limited government." - Roger Pilon

"[Small, limited government versus large, interventionist, statist authoritarian government; ever-vigilant skepticism versus 'good-sounding' propaganda:] The government will make use of these [special, law-enforcement] powers only insofar as they are essential for carrying out vitally necessary measures.... The separate existence of the federal states will not be done away.... The number of cases in which an internal necessity exists for having recourse to such law is in itself a limited one." - Adolf Hitler
(1889-1945) German Nazi Dictator. Source: attempting to allay the people's fears over the Reichstag's centralization of law enforcement with the passage of the 'Enabling Act' on March 23, 1933. The historian William Shirer attributes this Enabling Act alone as the legal basis for Hitler's dictatorship.

"[Morality, ethics and the golden rule of treating others as you would like to be treated:] This is the sum of duty (dharma): do not do to others what would cause pain if done to you." - Mahabharata
[https://www.britannica.com/topic/Mahabharata - states(Sanskrit: 'Great Epic of the Bharata Dynasty') one of the two Sanskrit epic poems of ancient India (the other being the Ramayana). The Mahabharata is an important source of information on the development of Hinduism between 400 bce and 200 ce and is regarded by Hindus as both a text about dharma (Hindu moral law) and a history (itihasa, literally 'that's what happened'). Appearing in its present form about 400 ce, the Mahabharata consists of a mass of mythological and didactic material arranged around a central heroic narrative that tells of the struggle for sovereignty between two groups of cousins, the Kauravas (sons of Dhritarashtra, the descendant of Kuru) and the Pandavas (sons of Pandu). The poem is made up of almost 100,000 couplets—about seven times the length of the Iliad and the Odyssey combined—divided into 18 parvans, or sections, plus a supplement titled Harivamsha (“Genealogy of the God Hari”; i.e., of Vishnu). Although it is unlikely that any single person wrote the poem, its authorship is traditionally ascribed to the sage Vyasa, who appears in the work as the grandfather of the Kauravas and the Pandavas. The date and even the historical occurrence of the war that is the central event of the Mahabharata are much debated.] This quote refers to - Anusasana Parva, Section 113, Verse 8.

"[Morality and ethics:] Whatever our degree of friends may be, we come more under their influence than we are aware. Who of us acts and speaks without an eye to the approbations of those he loves? Is not the assent of another a sort of second conscience? ...We prop ourselves up with accomplices, we surround ourselves with those who can down for us the uprisings of conscience. ...We were born dependent, our happiness is in the hands of others. Our character is molded by them and receives its coloring from them as much as our feeling relates the parental impress." - Maria Mitchell

"Our rulers will best promote the improvement of the nation by strictly confining themselves to their own legitimate duties, by leaving capital to find its most lucrative course, commodities their fair price, industry and intelligence their natural reward, idleness and folly their natural punishment, by maintaining peace, by defending property, by diminishing the price of law, and by observing strict economy in every department of the state. Let the Government do this: the People will assuredly do the rest." - Thomas Babington Macaulay
Southey's Colloquies on Society, 1830.
